Welcome to our website Berryscroft Stud has grown from a passion which has been with Terri since she was a child, when she could only admire horses from afar ! She bought her first horse in 1971, a little bay mare of unknown breeding and in 1973 sent her to stud. Terri chose the Arabian Stallion Dancing Magic (Dancing King/Munah [by Shifari]) belonging to Judy Rust, at “Pipers Green Arabian Stud” in Ottershaw, Surrey. This mating produced a grey colt (Silkstream Dancing Colours) and the mare re-visited Dancing Magic in 1974 this time producing a lovely chestnut filly (Silkstream Saffron Dancer).
By this time ‘Arabitis’ had struck and in 1975 Terri bought her first part-bred filly from Kay Healey, named Kelmstone Lady Veronica (Cranleigh Red Shadow/The Lady Cressida [by Rushti]), she was ¾ Arab. Terri went to all The Arab Horse Society Shows, this being her annual holiday for some years, when they were held at Syon Park, Kempton Park, Ascot Racecourse and The East of England Showground at Peterborough and saw some of the most beautiful horses which only cemented the desire to have her own pure-bred Arabian. Watching the Stallion classes she fell in love with a beautiful liver chestnut Stallion called Magnifico, who seemed to always be the bridesmaid to Haroun’s bride ! In 1976, Terri followed Chris and Pete Breach back to their lorry after the Senior Stallion class at Ascot and almost begged them to let her send Kelmstone Lady Veronica (Vicky) to Magnifico the next year (1977). They did not usually accept Part-breds to him but luckily made an exception and Vicky visited him, duly producing a lovely bay filly in 1978 (Silkrose Majestique). Photo on Right Terri showed the mare and foal locally and they did quite well, so she decided to enter the AHS Show at Ascot in 1978, Kelmstone Lady Veronica was 4th in her class and her foal was 2nd in hers ! During this time Terri became friendly with Chris and Pete Breach and they were very helpful, giving lots of advice and suggestions and it was through Chris that she found her first pure-bred filly in 1977, a bright chestnut with a flaxen mane and tail called ‘Zella’ (Merry Moments [by Mikeno]/El Fareda [by Hanif]). She was a lovely filly and was shown at local and county shows; she also did quite well, with some 1st and 2nd placings and she was H.C. at the AHS Show in Ascot. Zella was successfully shown as a 2 and 3 yr old and went to stud with Chris and Pete at Ambassadors Arabian Stud in Copthorne, W. Sussex, visiting their lovely grey Stallion Daoud El Shedid (Grojec/Kasmira) in 1981. She produced a strapping grey colt the next year (1982), named Zarqa. Zarqa was sold as a 4yr old to an endurance rider, but when his new owner became unwell he was sold on again. Zarqa went on to a racing home and won at least one race that we know of.
In 1983 Terri’s first child, Michelle came along and, in 1985 David was born and as Terri and Dave could not afford to keep horses and look after children, (like most of us that keep our horses at livery) all the animals were rehomed. Terri kept in touch with Chris and Pete Breach and their family and, to some extent the Arab Horse World, which was starting to change by this time ! A trip to an International Show at Merrist Wood was an eye-opener for Terri as to just how much the showing side of the Arab World had changed. The type of horse in the ring was so different to the type she saw and admired in the late seventies/early eighties.
Terri’s love of Arabs had not waned at all during this ‘time-off’, she also had a great affection for Welsh Cobs following her many visits to the Pipers Green Stud where Judy Rust had a fabulous herd of Champion Welsh Cobs. In 2002 she bought a Section D colt foal (Floreat Morgan photo on left), he has since been gelded and has such a lovely nature that he is our companion and ‘uncle’ horse; in 2004 she purchased a dun Section D filly foal (Broughton Rhiannon - photo on right).
In August 2006 a pure-bred Arabian mare presented herself needing a home and Dave bought her (Makheeleha) for Terri. Makheeleha was to be the foundation mare of Berryscroft Stud and visited Spearmint in 2007 and was scanned in foal 3 times. We all eagerly awaited the birth of this foal in May this year and when Makky went a month overdue our vet examined her and told us she was not in foal. We were all devastated at this news and could not quite believe it as Makky looked every inch in-foal to the point of having bagged up. We will try again with Makky, but she is 19 now and it has been about 10 years since her last foal, so fingers crossed !
This year, however, did see the arrival of our first foal here, a lovely part-bred colt by Daas out of Broughton Rhiannon (Bella), our young Welsh Cob mare. She went to stud with Makky so her foal would have a friend to play with! The best laid plans, eh? You can see pictures of this handsome young man on the Youngstock page.
We hope you enjoy looking at our horses and we would be very pleased to hear from you.
